Luis Rodriguez, Operations Manager, CUIMC Public Safety

What role does Public Safety play in Commencement activities?

Public Safety supports all events on campus during Commencement Week. We ensure the safety of all students and staff along with the thousands of guests who arrive on campus over the course of the week.

What’s different during Commencement Week in the Public Safety world?

For us, the only real difference for the number of people on campus. Our staff does a great job of helping out whenever we can. We try to maintain our normal operations while also helping out the visitors and guests coming to campus. I spend most of my time in the field to ensure that everything runs smoothly. By walking from the Armory to Alumni Auditorium, 50 Haven, and the Vagelos Education Center, I can easily average about 30,000 steps on the three main days. It's definitely a busy week but we look forward to it.

What do you or other Public Safety officers particularly enjoy about working Commencement?

I personally enjoy watching the smiles all around campus. Our students have worked extremely hard throughout their time at CUIMC. This is a time for them to finally take a sigh of relief and enjoy their accomplishment.
