Madeline Segarra

Favorite thing about your current role.

The flexibility to implement new techniques or systems. In the midst of researching the information needed to make my analyses accurate and complete, I still find time in my position to improve workflow for our managers, engineers, and mechanics. We are all responsible for maintaining the campus and making sure things run smoothly. I look for things that not only give our team the opportunity to work more efficiently but also emphasize the outstanding work we do.

What is your favorite thing about Washington Heights?

The history, the people, the food, the music. What’s not to like?! It often reminds me of where I grew up in the Bronx. It was such a melting pot of so many ethnic groups, so much diversity, and to have everyone live together in harmony is a beautiful experience.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be an astronaut. I grew up watching Star Trek re-runs and loved the fantasy world of what could be for our civilization. I still believe in that, but unfortunately, we are so divided and so hurtful and scared that it will probably take us longer to get there. At least I hope we can get there.

What brings you joy/something that makes you smile?

I love curling up on my bed with my daughter Cheyenne, my dog Neptune, and my cat Gia, and just watching something that makes us laugh so hard or cry so deeply that we try to hide it from each other, which makes us laugh even more about it.

Advice to your younger self.

Stop spending so much and save lots of money. This way you can invest for your future and buy a house or property while you’re young.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

I would choose the power to control time. The ability to go back and forward in time, to slow it down, to speed it up, to freeze it, and to rewind it. I think that would be a cool and huge responsibility and power to have.
