Winter Weather Advisory for December 13-14
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for New York City, along with parts of New Jersey and Long Island, in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday, December 13, through 1 p.m. Sunday, December 14.
The NWS is currently forecasting snow accumulations between two and four inches. Expect slippery, icy, and hazardous conditions during this time. Use mass transit when possible, allow extra travel time, and use caution as you navigate around campus. Normal operations are anticipated on campus.
The Emergency Management Operations Team is monitoring the situation and will keep you updated by email and/or text as well as via this page and the Columbia Preparedness site should new information become available that impacts you or our campus.
Prepare Your Spaces For The Snow This Weekend
Please help preserve buildings and your own belongings. Securely close all windows, window shades, blinds, or curtains. This single step may be the most important way that you can protect your space from potential damage.
- Securely close all windows and doors to prevent drafts and frozen pipes. Be sure to close all windows in spaces that are not normally occupied, including conference rooms and shared spaces.
- Make sure all faucets are off.
- Turn off computers, lights, appliances, electronics, and other non-essential equipment when not in use.
- Make sure all critical equipment is connected to emergency power outlets. Contact CUIMC Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3, if you are unsure, and a representative will visit your area to assess it.
- Leave all radiator valves and fan coils turned on to ensure adequate heating and to avoid freezing or plumbing-related damage.
- Where applicable, fan coils should be set to the slowest speed setting.
- Student residents: Keep the heat on low while you’re away from your on-campus apartment or dorm.
- Keep windows and vents clear to allow proper ventilation and heating.
- Move electrical or valuable items off the floor and away from windows.
- Limit the use of automatic doors during the cold winter season to save energy and minimize cold air entering the building lobbies.
What We Are Doing
Facilities will have additional staff on campus to salt grounds and remove snow and ice, as well as to monitor building operations systems.
