Heat Advisory: July 20-24

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory beginning at noon on Wednesday, July 20, and continuing until approximately 8 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, with temperatures in the 90s and the heat index making it feel well over 100 degrees. CUIMC Facilities Management continues to manage our energy use while protecting critical equipment and maintaining comfortable temperatures throughout the campus.

You can stay safe and help us conserve energy by following these simple steps during heatwaves and throughout the rest of the summer.

Plan Ahead in the Event of Widespread Power Outages:

  • Review any departmental contingency plans and emergency protocols—including those related to equipment operation—in the event of a fluctuation of power or power outage.
  • Make sure all critical equipment is connected to emergency power outlets. If you are unsure if your equipment is plugged into an emergency power outlet, contact CUIMC Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3, and a representative from Facilities Engineering will visit and assess your area.
  • Keep all freezers, refrigerators, and environmental room doors closed and limit access. Typically, this equipment will maintain temperature for approximately four (4) hours. Do not place dry ice or cryogenic materials in cold rooms, as they can create a hazardous, oxygen-deficient atmosphere.
  • Tightly seal all containers in fume hoods or remove and safely store them elsewhere in the lab. Shut off all gas valves servicing the fume hoods.
  • Refrain from conducting any laboratory work involving hazardous materials–including chemicals, biological, and radiological materials.

What We Will Do:

  • Monitor performance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Facilities Management personnel are available to respond to any issues that may arise.
  • If you have any temperature-related issues, please contact us at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3, and a mechanic will be dispatched to address the issue.

What You Can Do:

  • Make sure windows, shades, blinds, and exterior doors are closed. Report any broken or inoperable window in open position to CUIMC Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3.
  • Turn off air conditioners in unoccupied rooms.
  • Set air conditioner fan speeds to the lowest setting possible and keep thermostats at higher temperatures for energy conservation.
  • Turn off lights, appliances, electronics, and other non-essential office equipment when not used.
  • Refrain from using elevators when possible.
  • Make sure cell phones are charged and have a spare battery on hand.
  • Look for every opportunity to reduce your personal electricity usage.
  • Report any service problems to CUIMC Facilities Management at 212-305-HELP (4357), option 3.

Stay Safe:

In addition to saving energy, keep in mind these additional tips from the American Red Cross to stay safe and cool this summer:

  • Dress for the heat. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Light colors will reflect away some of the sun's energy. It is also a good idea to wear hats or use an umbrella.
  • Stay hydrated. Carry water with you and drink continuously even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which dehydrate the body.
  • Slow down, stay indoors, and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
  • Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
  • Learn how to beat the heat from NYC Emergency Management.
