    A primary project identified from the Sustainable Energy Master Plan was the interconnection of chiller plants on the “superblock” of the Medical Center. What this meant was to install piping to connect chilled water piping in buildings and chiller plants across the Black Building, P&S Building and Hammer Building.

    During 2011 Columbia University Medical Center installed a Building Management System within the William Black Building. This new computer-based control system monitors and optimizes the building’s mechanical and electric equipment, such as air conditioning, chiller operation, heating or hot water. During the installation digital sensors were placed throughout the systems to take temperatures and pressures in order to ensure services supplied to the building were efficient and comfortable for tenants.

Because we are constantly improving our campus, a smart way to guarantee an improvement is through an establishment of standards. They cover bathrooms, corridors, offices and laboratories, ensuring our primary space types have a target for performance.

    In early 2011, CUMC undertook a steam and condensate system analysis to identify, tag and test existing traps across the system for both research and housing buildings. A steam trap is a device along a steam line that releases condensate, or water that forms as the steam begins to cool along its pathway, as well as other air or non-condensable gases that could cause potential issues in the system.
