A Year to Remember
2022 anniversaries across the CUIMC campus
While the CUIMC campus is filled with new, up-to-date buildings, the schools and hospitals they house date back centuries. 2022 marks the 255th anniversary of the birth of the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (founded 1767), the 251th anniversary of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (founded 1771 as New York Hospital), and the 100th anniversary of the Mailman School of Public Health.
Where can you find more information of these and other milestones in the history of the Medical Center? Try the CUIMC History page on the Archives & Special Collections website. A department of the Augustus C. Long Health Sciences Library, Archives & Special Collections collects and preserves the records of Columbia’s four health sciences schools and affiliated hospitals. Its history page has timelines on the history of the health sciences at Columbia and the construction of the Medical Center campus; lists of deans of the schools of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and public health; explanations of building names; and short presentations on the history of VP&S and the School of Nursing, among other resources. Be sure to consult it when questions arise about any aspect of CUIMC history and don’t hesitate to contact Archives staff for further information at hslarchives@columbia.edu.
