Updated Custodial Schedules Launching This Spring

Beginning this spring, Facilities Management will launch updated custodial cleaning schedules across CUIMC as part of a multi-phase rollout designed to better align services with how campus spaces are used. These updates follow a comprehensive review of existing routines and introduce new cleaning frequencies that prioritize high-traffic and public areas, while adjusting service levels for offices, labs, and lower-use spaces.

What’s Changing

As part of the updated approach, certain space types—including offices, administrative areas, and labs—will transition from daily service to biweekly cleaning. Frequency is determined by space usage, service needs, and operational priorities. Examples include:

  • Offices: Biweekly cleaning of floors, dusting, and surface touchpoints
  • Labs: Biweekly service based on activity and operational requirements
  • Carpet vacuuming and floor care: Biweekly and extended interval frequencies in accordance with space type (e.g., extraction or refinishing every 24 months instead of 18 months)
  • Some tasks will be completed on a two-week rotation, meaning they may not occur daily but will be delivered within a structured, predictable schedule. This applies to select dusting, detailed floor care, and surface cleaning tasks.

What’s Not Changing

  • Public and high-use spaces: Daily service will continue in public spaces; examples include:
    • Restrooms
    • Corridors and stairwells
    • Elevators
    • Lobbies, entrances, and common areas
  • Clinical spaces: Cleaning frequencies and service levels in clinical areas will remain unchanged.

These areas will receive replenishment of supplies, touch-ups, and routine care throughout the day, with detailed cleaning completed during the evening shift.

Phased Rollout

The updated custodial schedules will roll out across campus in phases to enable real-time evaluation and ensure minimal disruption. Building-specific announcements will be shared in advance.

Requesting Additional Cleaning

Routine custodial services are provided at no cost to departments. Custodial teams do not move furniture or personal belongings; cleaning is performed around items left on surfaces and floors.

If you need any of the following, please submit an online work order:

  • additional cleaning outside the routine;
  • urgent cleaning requests; or
  • specialized or non-routine services (e.g., event support)
