Project Manager, Capital Project Management

For Santia Valerio, a half-Jamaican and half-Dominican woman, it was important for her to pursue a career that would have impact and could benefit marginalized communities.

Pursuing a Career in STEM

I knew I was going to be mechanical engineer, but the built environment somewhat just happened. Since joining the Capital Project Management team, I’ve learned so much about the innovation and groundbreaking research that comes out of CUIMC and the idea that I can support very important work in some way brings me joy.

I believe my very existence in [the facilities and construction] field is impactful; I hope to show BIPOC children (especially female-identifying children) that they, too, can have a career in STEM.

Celebrating Her Heritage

I love dancing to Latin music! Dominicans know how to celebrate and dance the night away. Before COVID, I would attend the Dominican Independence Day Parade in NYC.

On weekends, I sometimes make platano maduro to go with my breakfast and, I drink sancocho soup when I’m sick. I also rely on herbal medicine and “vaporu” (Vicks VaporRub) to help me feel better.

Finding Inspiration in her Family

My grandma and abuela sacrificed so much so that they could bring their kids to America and have a chance at a better life. That will, love, and strength is what motivates me. My uncle is an engineer; he inspired me to become an engineer and use my talents for the benefit of others.

Supporting CUIMC during the Pandemic

I feel very privileged to assist with helping to keep the important work going at CUIMC. [The Capital Project Management team] was eager to assist and find ways to help our community. Everyone showed how resilient and creative they are. I also was impressed with how we were able to adapt.

At times, however, it was overwhelming because so much was happening both on- and off-campus. It was very important for me to use my time to learn, get involved in and help spread awareness on social justice issues that are currently affecting society. It also was important for me to understand how best to protect others and myself while we are still in this pandemic.
