National Preparedness Month: Take Steps Today to Be Ready in an Emergency
Emergencies can happen with little warning. National Preparedness Month, observed every September, is an opportunity to take practical steps now that can help you respond more safely and confidently if the unexpected occurs.
At CUIMC, the Emergency Management Operations Team works with partners across the medical center, Columbia University, and NewYork-Presbyterian to prepare for emergencies, review response plans, conduct drills, and provide information to the community.
Individual preparation is also important. From stocking up on emergency supplies to knowing where to shelter during a major storm to connecting with trusted neighbors in the event of a fire, a plan made today can help you protect yourself, your household, and those who depend on you. Stay Informed
Emergencies can change quickly, so make sure you have reliable ways to receive updates.
- Review your contact information and sign up for Columbia emergency text notifications. FEMA also recommends having multiple ways to receive alerts, including the FEMA app.
- During an on-campus emergency, call CUIMC Public Safety at 212-305-7979. For a medical emergency, call 911.
- Know the location(s) of the nearest on-campus automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
