Hammer Bldg: Facade Repairs Beginning Oct. 2023

Beginning in October 2023, we will be conducting façade repairs at Hammer Health Sciences Center. These repairs are being completed in accordance with Local Law 11, a New York City law that requires property owners to inspect all exterior walls of commercial and residential buildings higher than six stories every five years.

Highlights of what to expect:

  • We will begin assembling scaffolding along the building’s north and west elevations facing Haven Avenue and West 169th Street at the beginning of October, during off-hours.
  • Additionally, we will be installing railings at the north and south skylights of the Hammer Building during normal hours, Mondays through Fridays.
  • Once the scaffolding is in place, construction activity will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
  • The contractor will be performing the inspections and maintenance from suspended scaffolds on the exterior of the building; access to the inside of the building is generally not required.
  • There will be periods of increased noise due to minor drilling in some areas of the building facade to remove the damaged brick, stone, or mortar.
  • During this time, please keep windows and shades closed, especially in sensitive areas.
  • Site protection, including flag persons and safety cones, will be present.

We anticipate the repair work will conclude in late 2024. Activities listed are subject to change based on approval, University events, other requirements, and unforeseen circumstances. For any questions or concerns, please contact Sonya Chao, project manager, at yc4268@cumc.columbia.edu.
