Electrical Shutdown Affecting Select Locations in VP&S, VC, and Presbyterian buildings, May 11, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Due to emergency repairs, we will be conducting a temporary electrical shutdown from 7 a.m. to approximately 7 p.m., TOMORROW, May 11, that will affect select services in the following locations:

  • Presbyterian Building: Normal power and lighting on floors 8, 9, and 18

  • Vanderbilt Clinic: Normal power and lighting on floors 9 and 11 through 16

  • Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Building: Building-wide HVAC service

All equipment plugged into emergency (red) outlets will be unaffected. Fume hood service also will be unaffected and remain operational throughout the shutdown.

In preparation for the upcoming shutdown, please take the following precautionary steps before you leave on TODAY:

  • Save all files and important documents.

  • Completely turn off all computers and laptops.

  • Turn off all other electronic devices and non-essential laboratory equipment.

  • Ensure all essential equipment is connected to emergency power (red) outlets.

  • We highly recommend that all freezers, refrigerators, cold rooms, and environmental room doors be kept closed and access prohibited during this shutdown period. Typically, this equipment maintains temperature if the doors are kept closed. Please note, the placement of dry ice or cryogenic materials in cold rooms can create a hazardous, oxygen-deficient atmosphere and must be avoided. If necessary, please relocate critical materials to unaffected freezers for the shutdown.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation as we work to improve our facilities. For issues in laboratories during the temporary shutdown, please call Public Safety at 305-8100 and a mechanic will be dispatched to address the issue. If you have questions about this shutdown, please contact Fred Arce, assistant director at aa164@cumc.columbia.edu.
