Meet Joe Fernandez

Joe Fernandez has been with Facilities Operations for 31 years, starting in a union role and later becoming a supervisor for more than 20 years. Growing up, he aspired to be an x-ray technician, and today, his joys come from helping others, solving issues at Columbia, and spending time with his grandkids.

What is your favorite thing about your current role?

I’m a people person. I love meeting people here at the medical center and helping them fix their problems. One of my hidden talents is that I'm good at repairing things; no matter what the problem is, I’m always assisting.

Who are your role models?

My parents, especially my dad and stepdad. They always showed me how to do things.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

An x-ray technician—I always wanted to work in a hospital.

What superpower would you choose for yourself?

Seeing the future.

Funny CUIMC story?

One time, I was on vacation when there was a power outage in NYC. I drove in from New Jersey, took the CUIMC truck to Queens and got dry ice to help. This ended up saving us millions of dollars, and I received the President's Award for my efforts!

How would you describe yourself in one word and why?

Awesome—I believe in myself.
